Office of Global Learning hosts a range of activities for the exchange students. They range from the welcome events happening in HKUST to touring in Hong Kong, from traditional Chinese sports and festive food tasting to experiencing the vibrant life of this amazing city.

ORIENTATION ACTIVITIES

To make your exchange life in HKUST fruitful, a series of orientation activities are organized for you. Have a good start of your fun exchange!

Below are the sessions which you are expected to attend to get essential information about your living at HKUST and in Hong Kong. You should get registered before the start of the term and join the orientation events to make new friends.

Hong Kong, also known as "The City of Life", has always been known for its vividness and exciting adventures. Around the city, you can always feel the energy of people around. As a shopping paradise, Hong Kong has more than just shopping malls. We will start the tour by bringing you to The Peak, where you can enjoy a spectacular view of the harbour and city lines of Hong Kong. You will have a chance to shop in the famous street markets around Mong Kok and Yau Ma Tei afterwards. We wrap up the night alongside the harbour where you can view A Symphony of Lights. Travel is by coach; dinner is not included; and some walking is required.

Hong Kong Day Tour (B) - Hong Kong Heritage

Hong Kong, with a rich background of Chinese culture, is much more than just the heart of finance. We have lots of preserved heritage that used to be venues for religious worshipping. By joining this tour, you will visit Chi Lin Nunnery, a large Buddhist template complex built in traditional Tang Dynasty architecture and Che Kung Template, that could be traced back to the end of Ming Dynasty. We will also visit The Hong Kong Heritage Museum. Its recent "Bruce LEE: Kung Fu-Art-Life" exhibition will probably interest you most if you are a fan of Kung Fu.Travel is by coach; dinner is not included; and some walking is required.

Pineapple Bun and Egg Tart Making Workshop

Pineapple bun and egg tart are very popular local pastries in Hong Kong. Pineapple bun’s name refers to the look of characteristic topping of the bun and it does not traditionally contain pineapple. Egg tart is a kind of custard tart which is often served in dim sum restaurants. It consists of a pastry crust filled with egg custard.

Survival Cantonese and 'Yum Cha' like a Local (Session I)

To help you feel more at home in Hong Kong, we are organizing a survival Cantonese workshop specifically for exchange students to teach you some basic, but practical Cantonese over dinner. Exchange Buddies will become your Cantonese tutors to introduce to you the tradition of Cantonese & Yum Cha culture. With no doubt, you will have fun learning survival and socializing Cantonese with us while enjoying dim sum.

Shaolin Martial Arts & Tai-O Tour

Shaolin is one of the oldest styles of Chinese martial arts. In this tour, you are able to learn this traditional martial arts in Shaolin Wushu Culture Centre in Tai O in the morning. After the lunch, you will be able to tour around Tai-O, a quaint and picturesque fishing town where you can see the traditional stilt houses. Note: The tour involves extensive exercise and walking. Sportswear and sportshoes are required.

Chinese Sausage Roll and Peach Bun Making Workshop

Chinese sausage roll and peach bun are traditional Chinese steamed pastry. They are made with Chinese sausage and lotus seed paste filling respectively. Traditionally, locals will eat peach buns to celebrate birthdays which symbolize longevity.

Chinese Ceramic Painting Workshop

Chinese ceramic painting has a very long history since pre-dynastic times. In the workshop, students would learn about the canton on-glaze painting and demonstrate the skills on porcelain teacups with your own creativity. Students' masterpiece will then return to you after firing.

Lamma Island Hiking and Fisherfolk’s Village Tour

Lamma Island is the third largest island in Hong Kong with lots of attractive scenery, including cultural and archeological sites. This is a full day hiking tour which lunch is included. The tour guide will also give you some ideas about the historic marks left in Lamma Island, and how the people feed by fishing industry in Hong Kong, where it is well known as a metropolitan city.

Enrollment

Students may enroll to Hong Kong Day Tour and Activities-of-your-choice through MyStudyAbroad System by the enrollment deadline.

Enrollment deadline: 11 January 2023 (Wed)

There are limited quotas for each activity. Seats will be allocated randomly if the enrollment exceeds the quota of the activity. Enrollment result and payment details will be announced by email within 2 working days after the deadline. Seats will be secured if you pay for the activities on MyStudyAbroad System by the payment deadline. Online payment within 2-3 days is required for securing your seat. Payment is non-refundable. Confirmation email will be sent to you regarding the activities that you have successfully enrolled afterwards.

We reserve the right to cancel an activity with refund due to insufficient enrollment.
