How can I apply?
Students can apply directly as ”Visiting Students” on a fee-paying basis in most universities. You can check the eligibility requirements of the host institution.
The applications do not go through HKUST and admission decisions are made by the host institution. You should research carefully about offerings before committing to a program.
Procedures at HKUST
Obtain Academic Advising from your School and your Major Department
Before participating in any self-arranged study programs, you are required to consult your HKUST academic advisor, your Major Department and your School regarding your study plan and progression. Students who are planning to transfer the credits from the self-arranged study must check with your School whether there are specific requirements and restrictions.
Credit transfer is handled by Academic Registry. For details about credit transfer, please check with their website for the procedures and details.
Complete the form "Application for Pre-Approval at Other Institutions (for Undergraduate students)"
The form has to be completed by BOTH your Major Department/Program Office and your School. You are required to provide all supporting documents or additional information to your Major Department/Program Office and School if you are asked to do so.
Register your participation with HKUST Office of Global Learning Experience
Upon obtaining a completed "Application for Pre-Approval at Other Institutions (for Undergraduate students)", students are required to register your self-arranged study program by submitting a Registration of Pre-approved Self-arranged Study. For details, please click here. After submission of your registration, you will receive a confirmation in MyStudyAbroad System together with a confirmation letter.
Apply Leave from Study (for students whose pre-approved self-arranged study is falling on Fall and/or Spring Term)
If your pre-approved self-arranged study falls into HKUST Fall and/or Spring Term, you are also required to apply for Leave from Study (Form RR - 8). The confirmation letter downloadable from MyStudyAbroadSystem is required for the leave application.
Submit documents to prove your commitment to participate in the study program
Students are then required to submit documents to prove your commitment to participate in the study program, including study program acceptance letter, the program commitment proof to participate, and proof of your approved study leave before your study program begins. Failure to do so will result in revocation of the approval and will render you ineligible for credit transfer.
